Carillion
Carillion
Sunday Telegraph National Business Award 2007

Carillion, a construction company based in Middlesex, caught the eye of Edge Award judges with its focus on fun, imaginative programmes that introduce young people to the industry while building their communication and teamwork skills.

As well as offering work experience placements, the company works with the Hounslow Education Business Partnership to offer thoughtful, well-designed programmes for young people. Students are offered the opportunity to attend Building Days, where they take on roles such as quantity surveyor or site engineer.

A project for Year 10 students, 'Design a Sustainable Town', has also proved a big success in teaching teamwork and communication skills, as well as helping students learn about construction and sustainability. All activities are run with future careers in mind, and already a number of students have entered into construction apprenticeships with Carillion as a result of attending one of these sessions.

Carillion plans to use its Edge Awards prize money to fund the development of new activity days and challenges, beginning with the Hounslow area but eventually rolling them out to the rest of the country. A new construction challenge inherited from a company that Carillion recently acquired will be one of the first projects to benefit from the cash.
