| Dyke House School Medium-to-Large Business Award winner 2006 Dyke House school runs an Advanced Modern Apprenticeships scheme, training apprentices in ICT as technicians. Dozens of young people have completed the scheme and, in an area with high unemployment, these apprentices make invaluable role models to the school’s pupils. With its Edge Awards funding the school plans to organise residential training courses for trainees. It will improve the apprentice scheme's training facilities by building a state-of-the-art training area for apprentices both for Dyke House School itself and local partner schools, in particular, primary schools. "We believe that we are a model for other schools locally and nationally, as it is unusual for an 11-16 school to recruit and train Advanced Modern Apprentices," said a spokesperson for the school. "We want to shine so that others copy us and the scheme becomes mainstream. Our exam results are improving year by year. This method of 'growing your own staff' supports the government's workforce development in schools and has also contributed to the learning culture in our school."
